EcoMaratona del Chianti Classico 42km/D+ 900

The athletes start from the suggestive and ancient Castle of Brolio, which is located at 490 m.s.l.m., thanks to Baron Francesco Ricasoli who for years has allowed us to set up the departure at the Castle and cross his own properties. The panorama and landscapes, made even warmer and more welcoming by the colors of autumn, will make you free from any feeling of fatigue.

The first 5 km are almost flat, ideal for warming up, but with a minimum difference in height until the arrival at the Castle of Cacchiano, at an altitude of 505 m a.s.l. from where you can enjoy an incredible view: a breathtaking view of Siena, the Chianti hills and the towns of Radda and Gaiole, the Val d'Orcia with Mount Amiata in the background.

42 Km 1

Take an easy and short path towards the village of Monti in Chianti and, thanks to the Rocca di Montegrossi company, you will find the 6.0 km refreshment point and the new part of the route 3 km long. It will be an alternation of forest road and vineyards, with a climb of about 100 meters in altitude from 7.5 km to 9.0 km.

The route continues on the old route in the Monti area. Shortly after, you will make a loop (new route) in the direction of the Sodi Morelline companies where you can find drinks and food at the second refreshment point, with an enchanting scenery both in the direction of the Brolio Castle and the Val d’Orcia. Here you will enter a vineyard and between the rows you will reach (280 m.s.l.m.) the very modern Badia di Coltibuono winery (km 14).

We will continue along a gentle climb on a dirt road, at km 17.00 (alt. 330m.a.s.l.) near the Castle of Lucignano. Here you will find another refreshment and an enchanting scenery around you.

Continue slightly uphill towards the castle of Brolio, following the road called Eroica (cycling event). At km 20 you will enter a vineyard to reach, still uphill, the Podernovi farmhouse (where the film “Ballo alone” directed by Bernardo Bertolucci was shot) to meet the refreshment point at km 21 (405 m.a.s.l.). You will have in front of you a wonderful scenery both in the direction of Siena and the vineyards that surround you. The second climb ends and through vineyards and woods you will arrive at the village of San Felice, a Chianti Classico winery, where you can observe a spectacular panorama and smell the scents of the harvest and of the new wine. Here there will be refreshments, you will be at 24,500 km.

You will continue in the direction of Villa a Sesta, in a short but steep descent until you arrive through a vineyard at km 27 just below the village of Villa a Sesta (alt 380 masl) where the athletes will find a rich refreshment organized by the friends of the Villa a Sesta, organizers of the legendary "Dit'unto", a street food event organized the week before our event.

From km 27 you will begin the new section of the route that proceeds towards the town of Castelnuovo Berardenga. You will go down for a km between the rows of vines and after an easy ford (alt. 245 mslm), the lowest point of the route, you will face a challenging uphill stretch of 100mt, arriving at the Castell'in Villa winery (30 km). You always continue on a dirt road in a flat stretch with an amazing view of the Chianti, between farmhouses, vineyards and cypresses: you will feel like you are in front of a painting. Shortly after, you will descend on an easy and pleasant descent of white road for about 2.5 km, the ideal time to recover your energy. From this point you will enter the shared 21km and 13km route up to the arrival in Castelnuovo.

At km 33 (alt. 255 m.s.l.m.) you will begin a long and discontinuous climb of only 100 meters in altitude which, considering the fatigue of the km, you must be careful not to underestimate. After a short but demanding climb at km 33,700 meters we took a refreshment from the friends of the Calcinaia farmhouse. Take a breath because the path continues among the olive trees and the woods. At km 35, when you come out of the wood, a wonderful scenery will open up in front of you and the pleasant confirmation that the climb is finally over.

In an easy stretch of dirt road you will arrive at the friends of the Montecucco oil mill where you will find a welcome refreshment at 36,550 km (alt. 350 m. Above sea level) and you can smell the scent of new oil. Continuing downhill always on a dirt road you will arrive close to a leap of red earth, where you will have to face a stretch of only 200 meters in length, very demanding and in case it rains even the mud 37.700 meters km.

Now the arrival is near and through a flat vineyard you will come to face the last roughness of only 50 meters in altitude. Km 40.

Before the climb we help you with the last refreshment. You are almost there! The finale will be a harmony, first on a downhill dirt road and at the last km in the vineyards of the Felsina company you will suddenly find in front of you a giant rooster, a symbol of Chianti Classico. You will reach a row of cypress trees that lead to the historic cellar of the Felsina company.

Then the last meters will lead you to the square for an arrival full of emotions and the awareness of having lived a journey in a wonderful territory where time has stopped.
